Upcoming Event: Excursion to Lake Ammer/Andechs Monastery

Saturday, May 17, 2025

Andechs Monastery, perched high above the eastern shore of Lake Ammer and renowned for its brewery, stands as Bavaria's oldest pilgrimage church. Embraced by the picturesque surroundings of Lake Ammer, the third-largest lake in Bavaria, it is a cherished destination for recreational activities for locals and tourists alike.

We take a boat trip across the lake and then hike up the Holy Mountain to the monastery. The moderately difficult hike with a slight ascent takes around 1.5 hours and rewards us with a magnificent view of the surrounding landscape. Once at the top, we enjoy lunch in the traditional Bavarian restaurant Br?ustüberl. Afterwards, there will be plenty of time to explore Herrsching's lakeside promenade and the idyllic shores of Lake Ammer.

The Welcome Service will cover the costs of the boat trip. Food and drinks at the restaurant (approx. €20) will be at your own expense.

Family members and partners are welcome to join! Places are limited; registration is first come, first served.

Events Offered

Every semester, the Welcome Service offers researchers from abroad a varied program of events with excursions and regular get-togethers, which often leave a lasting impression on participants.
In an informal and international atmosphere, our events enable researchers to establish interdisciplinary and cross-faculty contacts that contribute significantly to a successful research stay at the University of Augsburg.

Our offer of events ranges from city trips and museum visits to boat rides and hikes in the countryside. In addition to the most important sights in Bavaria, such as Neuschwanstein Castle or the state capital of Munich, the program also includes ‘hidden gems’ such as the medieval town of Landsberg am Lech or the Partnach Gorge.

Excursion to the Royal Castles

Once the private retreat of King Ludwig II of Bavaria, it is now one of the most famous and popular castles in Europe: Neuschwanstein Castle in Hohenschwangau. Surrounded by the Alps and idyllic lakes, this 19th century fairytale castle is said to have inspired the castle in the Disney logo. Our trip to the southern Allg?u region therefore offered an ideal mix of nature, architecture and history. After arriving in Hohenschwangau, we first hiked up to the famous Neuschwanstein Castle, where we were given an informative tour of the premises. After a short lunch break, we also explored the surrounding area and the lesser known Hohenschwangau Castle, the summer and hunting residence of the House of Wittelsbach, which is not far from Neuschwanstein and equally worth a visit.

Augsburg City Tour

Founded by the Romans around 0 BC, just before the turn of the millennium, Augsburg is one of the oldest cities in Germany. But Augsburg has much more to offer than just ancient history: even in more recent times, important personalities such as Jakob Fugger, Leopold Mozart, Bertolt Brecht and Rudolf Diesel have left their mark on the cityscape and history of Augsburg. Our guided city tour took us through the historic city centre, past magnificent fountains, towers and churches. We were particularly impressed by Maximilianstra?e with its magnificent buildings and courtyards, and the Lech canals with their medieval craftsmen's houses. Afterwards, we rounded off the tour with a joint lunch.

Excursion to Andechs Monastery at Lake Ammer

Andechs Monastery is not only one of the oldest pilgrimage churches in Bavaria, but also one of the few remaining abbey breweries in Germany. Perched on the 'Holy Mountain of Bavaria' high above the eastern shore of Lake Ammer, this distinctive regional landmark is the perfect destination for a relaxing day trip rich in nature and culture. With a boat ride across the lake and a hike to the monastery, we were able to enjoy the idyllic 'Five Lakes Region' to the full and spend a beautiful summer's day together in Upper Bavaria. The trip was rounded off with a joint visit to the beer garden and Bavarian specialties.

Excursion to the Partnach Gorge

The Partnach Gorge is one of the largest gorges in the Alps and a fascinating natural monument near Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Formed around 240 million years ago, the gorge is now around 700 metres long and over 80 metres deep in some places. On our guided tour of the Partnach Gorge, we explored its wild waterfalls, rapids and calm waters, all while safely walking the footpath along the river. We rounded off the day with a pleasant meal in a traditional Bavarian restaurant on a mountain pasture with a spectacular view of the Wetterstein massif.

Riegele Brewery Tour

The Riegele Brewery is one of the oldest private breweries in Bavaria and has been owned by the Riegele family since the 19th century and nowadays in the fifth generation. The brewery was founded in 1386 under the name ‘The Golden Horse Brewery’ before being renamed to the family name. On a guided tour of the brewery, we visited the malthouse, fermentation rooms and lager cellar and gained an interesting insight into the traditional art of brewing. We pleasantly rounded off the evening together with a ‘Brotzeit’, a traditional Bavarian snack, and a beer tasting.

Visit of the Textile and Industry Museum (tim)

The Textile and Industry Museum (tim) preserves the heritage of Augsburg's flourishing textile industry in the 19th century and is part of the European Route of Industrial Heritage. Housed in the historic building of a former worsted spinning mill, the museum is dedicated not only to history but also to the latest developments in the textile sector. From the concept of intelligent clothing to artificial muscles and carbon products, the high-tech section of the tim shows the future possibilities and new applications of textiles. Our guided tour of the tim gave us an understanding of the entire textile production cycle and even allowed us to look inside a historic machine hall. Afterwards, we rounded off the tour with a joint lunch.

Welcome Service Summer Celebration

The Welcome Service celebrated its 10th anniversary at the University of Augsburg in the summer semester 2023. As part of the anniversary celebration, all researchers from abroad were warmly welcomed to the University of Augsburg and the engagement of the hosts was honoured. In addition to a festive musical opening by the university orchestra and the official welcome by Prof. Dr. Peter Welzel, former Vice President for, among others, Internationalisation, speeches were given by the Head of the International Office, Dr. Sabine Tamm, and Dr. Jonah Otto, as an example of successful internationalisation at the university. Following the speech of thanks by the Head of Welcome Services, Susanne Graf, the evening was rounded off with music and a successful summer evening made its way, which offered the opportunity for an interdisciplinary and intercultural exchange of experiences and a chance to look back on the achievements of the Welcome Services while enjoying a sumptuous buffet and DJ entertainment.
