Mysticism in Dialogue. From ecstatic experience to social participation
Proposed Panel Series (sponsored by MEMGS)
Proposed Panel Series (sponsored by MEMGS)
Mysticism has recently found major attention in philosophical and literary debates, with a shift in focus becoming apparent due to mostly diachronic analysis. Mystical phenomena that are historically rooted in religious practice and therefore strongly focused on from a spiritual point of view are now much more frequently read as an intense experience of the present. Apart from various religious movements and denominations, those experiences are possible in nature, in city life, or in art. In unique ways, they (dis-)connect the experiencing self from/with its environment, bodily dimensions or history. Simon Critchley, for example, understands mystical ecstasy as a ‘fluid openness between thought and existence’ (On Mysticism. London 2024). For Niklaus Largier, mysticism appears in a continuum between sensual and aesthetic experience, between everyday life and art (Figures of Possibility. Stanford 2022). Mystical experience in addition as a disruption of conventional perception is an essential impulse for partaking and social engagement.
