Samuel Beckett, Krapp’s Last Tape

“Nothing to say, not a squeak“ (Samuel Beckett, Krapp’s Last Tape). – ?? ?? White face. Purple nose. Disordered grey hair. Unshaven. Very near-sighted … Hard of hearing. Cracked voice. Distinctive intonation. Laborious walk. This is 69 year old Krapp, a clown-like figure suffering from constipation but with a weakness for bananas, who lives a lonely and shabby existence in a darkened room. Hunched over an old tape recorder, he listens to his own voice at the age of 39, which in turn also reaches back to a younger self.

Krapp's Last Tape is a one-act play with a cast of one. It was first performed as a curtain raiser to Endgame from 28 October to 29 November 1958 at the Royal Court Theatre, London, starring Patrick Magee. It ran for 38 performances.
