RITUAL AND EMOTIONAL CONTROL: ANCIENT RECIPES FOR FEAR, LOVE, AND SUCCESS

The aim of this paper is to examine ancient recipes for amulets and preparations whose stated aim is to control either the emotions of the orderer or of those he wishes to influence. Amulets were not only intended to protect the wearer from various evils, including physical ones, but could also be made to arouse love, counteract or inspire fear, and to ensure achievement and success in society. Weshall question their effectiveness, whether clearly proclaimed in their self-praise discourse and/or indirectly induced. The function of amulets is to control the emotions of the wearer, even in the case of medical amulets, where it is implied that the wearer will take an active part in the healing by ordering and wearing the amulet. Here, however, we will focus on amulets and preparations that are expressly made to control emotions.
